Pour ce dernier chapitre dans la vie de ce grand maitre des arts martiaux, Donnie Yen reprend ce rôle qu’il a incarné lors des trois précédents volets. C’est sous la direction de Wilson Yip qui lui aussi reprend les reines pour ce dernier opus. Pour ce chapitre de la vie d’IP MAN, on retrouve celui-ci aux États-Unis, dans le Chinatown de San Francisco dans le but de trouver une école aux États-Unis pour son fils qui fut expulser de l’école à Hong Kong pour s’être battu à multiples reprises. Cette visite coïncide avec un problème au sein de la communauté chinoise, car l’ancien élève d’IP MAN, un certain Bruce Lee, offre des cours de Kung Fu à des non chinois, ce qui est mal vue par ces maitres qui aimeraient garder cet enseignement aux membres de la communauté. Si la recette est bonne, pourquoi la changer? N’ayez crainte la recette qui a rendu le film IP MAN populaire ainsi que les films subséquents, est de retour elle aussi. Il y a donc un combat avec un membre de la société, suite à une divergence d’opinion, puis Maître IP et Maître Wan auront un grand respect pour chacun. Suite à la défaire de Maître Wan par le sergent Barton Geddes des Marines, IP MAN se présente pour l’affrontement final de ce film. Un thème qui refait souvent surface dans les films de cette série est le racisme subi par la communauté chinoise, les Britanniques dans le premier film, par les Japonais, lors de l’occupation de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale et par les Américains lorsqu’il est aux États-Unis. Le racisme dans ces films est un excellent conducteur et donne au spectateur le gout de voir la victime sortir gagnante contre l’oppresseur. Pour sa part l’interprétation de Bruce Lee par Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan est au point et la ressemblance est magique, l’illusion est parfaite. La fin du film fait une rétrospective sur les trois autres films et est un très bel hommage sur la vie de l’homme. Si vous n’avez pas vu aucun des films précédents, je vous conseille de faire le visionnement des trois autres avant celui-ci pour avoir une meilleure appréciation de l’ensemble de l’oeuvre. Pour les amateurs de films de combat d’arts martiaux, vous serez tout simplement comblé. Pour les fans de Donnie Yen, n’ayez crainte celui-ci sera de retour dans l’adaption de Mulan.
